We chat with Yumiko, doctor, author and passionate health advocate!
We recently met Yumiko over on the gram, and since then have been in awe of her advocacy work with promoting positive body image, as well as cultural and gender equality in the workplace.
We also love her style! We managed to snag a mini interview with this busy lady, and hope to one day meet her in person!
Hi lovely Yumiko, please introduce yourself!
I’m Yumiko, I’m 34 years old, born in Tokyo, Japan. I moved to Australia when I was fifteen and now live and work in Sydney as a doctor.
How would you describe your personal style? Do you have a favourite silhouette or colour to wear?
I tend to switch styles around frequently but stick to shapes that suit my body type. For example, I have a long torso so I like to wear high-waisted clothes. I’m a practical person so if it has pockets, that’s a win for me! As I’ve gotten older I’ve become more adventurous with colour. I used to mostly wear neutrals and monochrome but these days I’ll wear a bold red or a yellow. I believe in ‘dopamine dressing’ – it truly does lift one’s mood!
What are you currently reading?
I’m listening to an audiobook – After Story by Larissa Behrendt
— Yumiko gives a passionate account of the toxic culture of bullying and overwork that junior doctors can experience in the workplace as part of their training and writes about it in her memoir, Emotional Female.
Name three interesting people you’d love to have dinner with & why?
I would love to catch up with three activists I’ve befriended on social media – Alyssa Ho, Tarang Chawla, and April Helene-Horton. I’ve met April in person but would also love to meet Alyssa and Tarang. They each articulate so well the issues in society about racism, violence against women, and fatphobia. I think we’d have an intelligent conversation, but most of all I think we’d have a lot of fun – their personalities definitely shine on the ‘gram!
What destination is at the top of your travel bucket list, when we can start travelling again?
Definitely Tokyo. I haven’t seen my family in two years!
Your favourite Wolf & Mishka piece?
The Edie shirt dress. I love the summery fabric, and the print is gorgeous! I like collecting prints of the female form. I think it’s beautiful.
Thank you so much Yumiko!
